Marina Plaza: Ancient Traditions Encased in Contemporary Luxury
The Marina Plaza’s approach to design aims to shape a unique, multi-purpose space that serves as a mediator between the Fisherman Wharf’s vernacular architecture adopted and the Marina Apartments and Middle Village’s iconic, luxury and lifestyle architectural language. The waterside piazza becomes a landmark that is unique to Portonovi and the Bay area, yet remains grounded in Montenegro’s textured landscape. The design methodology embraces the unique, distinctive architectural approach that embodies the statement – “to formally and comfortably sit on a visual piece of art”.
The Marina celebrates the cultural heritage of craftsmanship and artisan masonry as it interprets these ancient traditions in a contemporary light. Influenced by the Montenegrin mimosa flowers, the paving pattern blooms uninterruptedly across public spaces, stretching from the Middle Town, Marina Apartments and Fisherman’s Wharf, while focusing on the pedestrian. The square’s water feature encourages children’s play for young and old through the introduction of playful features such as removable custom art benches that also double as iconic sculptural landmarks whilst providing seating within the square. When appropriate, the square is able to evolve to accommodate various events and functions, including markets, concerts, and festivals.
